Rambling about J.Austen

Last night I was thumbing through my favorite parts of Sense and Sensibility. I have read the book several times, each time finding some new little tidbit to love. I came across the part where Willoughby was poetically describing how "[he'd] always loved a cottage" (that's why he ends up dumping MaryAnn to avoid losing his large estate, right?!) In fact many of the characters in the book make similar comments regarding the Dashwood's "simple living." When I read these bits it always brings up thoughts of how I hate hearing people call my home "starter home." What an assumption to believe that bigger and more expensive is always to be desired and chased after! Usually I get a little worked up and have to skip ahead in the book to read about how the various large estated villains are humbled. :) How funny is human nature that it remains the same throughout history? The timelessness of her characters and themes is one of the reasons I so love Jane Austen's novels. Although, I'm tempted to go back and cross out all references to a cottage and insert: "starter home."

There is a reason you are my bestest friend!!! I was just telling Bart that I wanted to get back to being me and I don't want what everyone else describes or says we are "supposed" to have. I want to make my own clothes, plant vegetables, shop at flea markets and thrift stores. According to my classes, the beginning of the
30s is a time of reidentifying ourselves. Your blog goes right along with what I was saying to Bart. Why does everything have to be so huge and over the top. I love the way your home is: full of love and comfortable and I don't want you to buy another house that is "bigger and better". You have the best house ever with a great family. It feels good to know someone else out there is feeling like me too. I think we need to take a trip to CO again with some John Denver playing!!!!

Go Granola, Go! I have been begging for a Colorado vacation for the longest time. Maybe we should ditch the menfolk and go it alone!

Never was a big John Denver fan, but I'm a big fan of you two. It was a joy (though scary) watching you find your identities the first time around, and it's still a joy (and still scary) watching you "re-identify" yourselves. You go girls! The real "bigger and better" is inside. Thanks for all the memories. - POPS
