Recipe for Clean

I've been buying granola (biodegradable) laundry soap for awhile now. This week I decided to make my own:

The ingredients may sound foreign (I've used Borax for years as a laundry booster), but you can find all of them at Ace Hardware, online, and probably plenty of other places around town. I prefer powder detergent, but you can make liquid from the same ingredients (see post below). I ended up making a Heavy Duty Wash Powder that is NOT biodegradable...Fels-Naptha is a detergent (it contains petrochemicals). If you want to make 100% biodegradable soap, leave out the Fels-Naptha and double the Ivory.
Get a big bucket and combine two cups each of:
  • Borax
  • Washing Soda
  • Fels-Naptha (grated)
  • Ivory (grated)

Ta-da! Use 1-2 Tbsp per load.
